By Kanika Modi · Part of the robot vacuum guides · Last verified 25 Sept 2026 against iRobot official documentation · 2 sources
iRobot groups Errors 14 and 15 together in its official error chart under the vacuum bin category: both mean the robot is not reading its bin correctly. The fixes are the same short sequence, so if you have already tried them for Error 14, this page tells you what to do when they have not held.
The Fix Sequence
First Pass ~3 Min
- Remove the bin by its handle.
- Confirm the filter is installed and pushed fully home.
- Push the bin back in firmly until it clicks, handle down on s-series models.
- Press CLEAN to restart.
If the Error Returns ~5 Min
- Wipe the metal contact strips on the bin and inside the bin well with a dry cloth. Dust films here cause recurring errors on both 14 and 15.
- Look for debris wedged in the bin slot and remove it.
- Check the bin body for cracks or warped tabs that stop it seating square.
Last Resort ~5 Min
- Restart the robot itself: hold CLEAN for 20 seconds until it powers down, then start it again.
- Error 15 immediately after all of the above points to a failing bin sensor or damaged bin: contact iRobot support with your model number.
Questions People Ask
What Does Error 15 Mean on a Roomba?
It is a bin-detection problem in iRobot’s official error chart: the robot cannot read its bin connection. Re-seat the bin until it clicks and press CLEAN.
How is Error 15 Different From Error 14?
They are grouped together by iRobot under vacuum-bin issues and share the same fixes. In practice Error 14 is the more common announcement on newer models; the troubleshooting sequence is identical.
Will Error 15 Fix Itself?
Sometimes a single re-seat clears it permanently. If it recurs weekly, the contacts are dirty or the bin is damaged: clean them, inspect the bin, and replace it if cracked.
