Ring Doorbell Not Working? The Full Troubleshooting Tree
By Kanika Modi · Part of the Ring doorbell guides · Last verified 26 Sept 2026 against Ring official documentation · 3 sources
A doorbell can fail in exactly four ways, and each has a different first move. This page is the map: find your symptom, follow its branch, and the linked guides carry the detail.
Symptom Decoder
| Symptom | Likely cause | First move |
|---|---|---|
| No live view, marked offline | Wi-Fi connection lost | Reconnect via Device Health |
| No light at all, dead | Battery empty or wired power failed | Charge the battery, or check the transformer/breaker on wired models |
| Light on, but no phone alerts | App permissions or notification settings | Check phone notification permissions for the Ring app; re-log in |
| Visitors ring, no chime inside | Chime disconnected or settings changed | App: Devices, doorbell, Chime Settings; re-link the chime |
| Setup fails repeatedly | Wrong password or 5 GHz network | Redo setup on 2.4 GHz |
| Frozen, unresponsive | Device hang | Hold the setup button 15–20 seconds to restart |
The Power Checks
Battery Models ~2 Hr
- Take the doorbell off its mount (or slide the battery out) and charge it fully with the included cable.
- A full light ring means full charge; refit and test.
- Battery draining fast? Weak Wi-Fi forces the radio to work harder: fix the signal first.
Wired Models ~15 Min
- Check the doorbell transformer: 16–24 V AC is required for most wired Rings.
- Check the breaker for the doorbell circuit.
- After restoring power, press the doorbell button a few times: the device re-syncs.
Questions People Ask
Why Has My Ring Doorbell Stopped Working Completely?
Check the light first: no light means power (charge the battery or check the transformer), a lit ring means connection (reconnect via Device Health). The symptom decoder above maps every case.
Why Can I Not Get Ring Notifications on My Phone?
The doorbell is usually fine: check the phone’s notification permissions for the Ring app, make sure you are logged into the right account, and that the device shows online in the app.
Why Does My Ring Doorbell Ring Inside No Longer?
The mechanical or digital chime has dropped its link: open the app, Devices, your doorbell, Chime Settings, and re-link the chime. Wired installs should also check the chime wiring at the transformer.
