That red LED isn’t one message; it’s several, and the pattern and model together tell you which one you’re getting. A Blink Outdoor 4 flashing red during setup is behaving normally; the same camera flashing red every 3 seconds for a week has dropped off your network. And on a Mini, solid red means something different again. The tables below decode every red pattern Blink’s own documentation defines, model by model, followed by the fix for each.
Red Light Decoder (by Model)
Battery Models: Outdoor 4, Outdoor & Indoor (3rd Gen), XT2, XT
| Red pattern | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 5 long flashes as batteries go in | Normal power-up sequence | Normal: nothing; a short red flash every 3 s follows until the camera is online |
| Short flash every 3 seconds | Camera is disconnected from the internet | Fix now: reconnect it |
| 5–6 flashes right after the blue recording light | Batteries are failing | Fix soon: Replace with fresh AA lithium |
| Brief flash on motion | Normal event indicator | Normal: Nothing |
| Solid red, never flashing | Hardware fault | Fix now: Contact Blink support |
Mini, Mini 2, Mini 2K+
| Red pattern | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Blinking red | Camera is starting up | Normal: Wait; if it never changes, run the Mini fix |
| Solid red | Can’t connect to your network; most often a wrong Wi-Fi password | Fix now: power-cycle, check password, and then reset |
| Red flash during setup, then green + blue | Normal; camera is ready to be added | Normal: Finish setup in the Blink app |
| Red and blue blinking together | Reset mode; the reset button is being held | Action: Release the button, then set the camera up again |
Video Doorbell (1st and 2nd Gen)
| Red pattern | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red LED flashing around the button | Doorbell is seeking a connection; normal during setup or a Wi-Fi/system change | Normal: Complete the step in the Blink app |
| Solid red | Setup attempt failed | Retry: Try again; if it repeats, replace the batteries |
| Blinking blue after a button press | Button-press event indicator | Normal: Nothing |
Fix 1: Battery Model Flashing Red (Reconnect It)
Camera Shows a Red Flash Every 3 Seconds ~5 Min
- Confirm your phone can reach the internet. If nothing in the house can, restart the router before blaming the camera.
- Power-cycle the camera: slide off the back cover, remove the batteries, wait 5 seconds, and reinsert them. You should see the 5 long red flashes of a normal boot, then the short every-3-second flash while it looks for the network.
- Still flashing after a couple of minutes? Open the camera’s settings in the Blink app and update its Wi-Fi. Blink cameras connect on the 2.4 GHz band only: a router that moved you to 5 GHz is a common culprit. Blink’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide walks through the app steps per model.
- As a last resort, delete the camera from the app and add it back as a new device.
Fix 2: Mini Showing a Solid Red Light
Mini, Mini 2, or Mini 2K+ Stuck on Red ~4 Min
- Unplug the USB cable, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in. A Mini that was online before will show solid blue with blinking green while it reconnects, then the LED goes dark once it’s back.
- Still solid red? The Wi-Fi password stored in the camera is wrong or outdated: re-enter it from the camera’s settings in the app.
- Then try the reset button. On the original Mini, it’s a small hole on the bottom next to the mount; on the Mini 2, it’s under where the mount connects, so remove the mount first. Press it with a thin object; Blink’s documentation warns that sharp objects can damage the button. When the light blinks red and blue together, release it, then set the camera up again from scratch.
- If the light is still red 120 seconds after the reset, it’s a support case (see below).
Fix 3: Red Flashes After Recording (The Batteries)
Battery Models: 5–6 Red Flashes After the Blue Light ~2 Min
- Replace both batteries with fresh AA 1.5 V lithium cells, non-rechargeable. Blink officially recommends Energizer Ultimate Lithium; other lithium brands work, though performance can vary.
- Skip alkaline batteries: they trigger false low-battery behavior once temperatures drop, which is why many cameras “go red” on cold nights and recover by noon.
- If the camera does nothing at all when batteries go in and you see no 5 long flashes, the cells are dead or inserted the wrong way round.
- On the Video Doorbell: batteries out for 5 seconds, then back in. A red LED flash means it’s ready to be re-added.
When Should You Stop Troubleshooting?
Contact Blink support rather than repeating resets if: the red LED stays on solid (never flashes) on a battery model; a Mini is still red 120 seconds after a reset; or a doorbell repeatedly ends setup on solid red even with fresh lithium batteries. Blink support contact options.
Questions People Ask
Why is My Blink Camera Flashing Red Every 3 Seconds?
On battery-powered models (Outdoor 4, Outdoor/Indoor 3rd gen, XT2, XT), a short red flash every 3 seconds means the camera is disconnected from the internet. Power-cycle it; take the batteries out for 5 seconds, then put them back in; and if it keeps flashing, update the camera’s Wi-Fi settings in the Blink app.
What Does a Solid Red Light Mean on a Blink Mini?
On the Mini, Mini 2, and Mini 2K+, solid red means the camera can’t connect to your network; most often because the Wi-Fi password is wrong or the network changed. Unplug it for a few seconds, verify the password, and if it’s still red, use the reset button and set it up again. Blinking red on a Mini is different: that just means it’s starting up.
Why Does My Blink Camera Show a Red Light After a Battery Change?
Five long red flashes when batteries go in is the normal power-up test. If you instead get no flashes, the cells are dead or inserted the wrong way. And 5–6 red flashes right after the blue recording light means the batteries are failing: swap in a fresh pair of AA 1.5 V lithium cells.
Does a Red Light on a Blink Camera Mean Someone is Watching?
No. The recording indicator on Blink cameras is the blue status LED, which lights during motion recording and live view. Red is used for connection, battery, and setup status; it is not a privacy indicator.
Why Does My Blink Camera Glow Red at Night?
A faint red glow visible only after dark comes from the infrared emitter mounted beside the status LED on Outdoor and Indoor (3rd gen) cameras. It’s the night-vision illuminator, and it’s working exactly as intended.
