Why Is My Smoke Alarm Chirping? Every Cause and the Fix

By Kanika Modi · Part of the smoke alarm guides · Last verified 25 Sept 2026 against First Alert, Kidde and NFPA documentation · 4 sources

Quick Answer: a single chirp every 30–60 seconds is almost always the battery. Chirping that survives a new battery means the battery is upside down, the drawer is loose, dust is in the sensor, or the alarm has reached its 10-year end of life.

Live chirp player — match your chirp

First, make sure it is a chirp and not an alarm: a chirp is a single short beep that repeats about once a minute, and it is maintenance. Three loud beeps repeated is the smoke alarm: get out and call 911 from outside. With that settled, work down this list: the causes are ordered by how often they turn out to be the problem.

The Chirp Decoder

Pattern Cause Fix
1 chirp every 30–60 s Low battery Replace the battery
Chirping continues after a new battery Battery backwards, drawer loose, or reset needed Reset the alarm
Chirping with no battery drawer Sealed 10-year unit at end of life Replace the whole alarm
3 chirps a minute (First Alert CO models) Malfunction Replace the unit
5 chirps a minute End of life (about 10 years) Replace the unit
Random chirps, worse at night Temperature swings drain a tired battery; dust in the sensor New battery, then clean the unit

Fix 1: The Battery Swap That Actually Stops the Chirp

Do This in Order ~5 Min

  1. Use a fresh battery from a named brand, not one from a drawer. Half of “new” spare batteries are already half dead.
  2. Match the + and − markings inside the drawer. A reversed battery chirps exactly like a dead one.
  3. Close the drawer fully until it clicks. A loose drawer does the same thing.

Fix 2: The Reset

For Chirping That Survived the New Battery ~3 Min

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Press and hold the test button for 15 seconds to drain residual charge.
  3. Insert the fresh battery and wait 30 seconds. The chirp should be gone.

Fix 3: Clean the Sensor

Dust and Insects Trigger Phantom Chirps ~5 Min

  1. Twist the alarm off its mounting bracket.
  2. Vacuum the vents gently with a brush attachment, or blow compressed air through them.
  3. Wipe the cover with a slightly damp cloth. Never paint a smoke alarm.

Check the Date Before Anything Else

The manufacture date is printed on the back of every alarm. Ten years from that date, the whole unit is at end of life and chirping will not stop until it is replaced: the sensor, not the battery, is worn out.

Questions People Ask

Why is My Smoke Alarm Chirping with a New Battery?

In order of likelihood: the battery is reversed, the drawer is not fully closed, the alarm needs a 15-second reset, dust is in the sensor, or the unit is at end of life. Work through Fixes 1 to 3 above.

Why Does it Chirp Only at Night?

Cooler nighttime temperatures lower battery voltage below the warning threshold. A battery that chirps at 3 am and goes quiet by noon is on its way out: replace it.

How Do I Stop the Chirping Permanently?

Fresh named-brand battery, 15-second reset, sensor cleaning. If the chirp still returns, the unit is at end of life: replace it. Never remove the battery and leave it out; a silent smoke alarm protects no one.

Is a Chirp Dangerous?

The chirp itself is only maintenance. But an alarm that has been ignored for months is often a dead alarm: fix the cause the same week.
