Google Nest Guides: Thermostat Lights, Resets and Battery
Nest guides hub · Last verified 12 Oct 2026 · Every guide is sourced from Google’s official Nest support documentation
Nest is Google’s smart home line: thermostats (the Learning Thermostat and the simpler Nest Thermostat), cameras and doorbells (Nest Cam, Nest Doorbell), and speakers and displays. The thermostat is the centerpiece here, and it communicates differently from cameras and alarms: no colored status LED on the wall like a Ring, but light patterns on the display ring, on-screen help codes like E292, and a rechargeable battery whose quirks explain most of what confuses people.
Thermostat light and error decoders
- Nest thermostat blinking red (very low battery, charging)
- Nest thermostat blinking green (startup and updates)
- 🌐 Nest thermostat offline (app control lost, wall still works)
- 🔢 Nest thermostat help codes and troubleshooting (E292, E74, E73 and the symptom map)
Battery and power guides
- 🔋 Nest thermostat battery (no replaceable batteries: how the internal battery works, low battery fixes)
Reset and setup guides
- 🔄 Restart or reset a Nest thermostat (ring-hold restart, tiered resets)
- 🔔 Reset a Nest Doorbell (restart vs factory reset, every model)
- 📶 Connect a Nest thermostat to Wi-Fi (newer models via app, older via ring)
How we source these guides
Every claim on this site is checked against the manufacturer’s current support documentation (support.google.com) at the date shown on each page. Where Google hasn’t documented a behavior, we say so instead of guessing. Thermostat models differ (Learning Thermostat generations versus the 2020 Nest Thermostat), so each guide states which hardware it covers.
