Roomba Error 14: “Re-install the Bin”, Explained and Fixed
By Kanika Modi · Part of the robot vacuum guides · Last verified 25 Sept 2026 against iRobot official documentation · 3 sources
Roomba announces it as “Error fourteen (14): Re-install the bin, then press CLEAN to restart.” iRobot’s official definition: the robot is not detecting a bin. Nothing about the robot’s brain is broken; the conversation between the bin and the robot’s sensors is. That conversation has four failure points, in order of likelihood.
The Four Fixes, in Order
Fix 1: Re-Seat the Bin ~1 Min
- Pull the bin out by its handle.
- Look inside the bin well: no debris blocking the slot.
- Push the bin straight in, firmly, until it clicks. On s-series robots keep the handle down while pushing.
- Press CLEAN. Done for most cases.
Fix 2: Check the Filter ~2 Min
- Open the bin and confirm the filter is present and pushed fully into its slot. iRobot’s guidance pairs the filter with bin detection on several models.
- A missing or half-seated filter can hold the bin slightly out of contact.
Fix 3: Clean the Bin Contacts ~5 Min
- Find the metal contact strips: on the bin, and matching points inside the bin well.
- Wipe them with a clean dry cloth (a melamine sponge works well). Dust films on these contacts are the classic cause of recurring Error 14.
- Re-seat the bin and press CLEAN.
Fix 4: Rule Out the Hardware ~5 Min
- Inspect the bin for cracks, especially around the handle and tabs: a warped bin can sit wrong.
- If the error returns immediately after all three fixes above, the bin sensor or the bin itself is failing: contact iRobot support, and if the robot is under warranty the bin is typically covered.
Questions People Ask
What Does Error 14 Mean on a Roomba?
The robot is not detecting its bin, per iRobot’s official error chart. The bin-to-robot connection has failed: re-seat the bin until it clicks and press CLEAN.
Why Does My Roomba Keep Showing Error 14 After Reseating the Bin?
The metal contacts between the bin and the robot are usually dirty: wipe them with a dry cloth. Also confirm the filter is fully seated, and check the bin for cracks.
Is Error 14 the Same as Error 15?
They are siblings: both are vacuum-bin detection problems on iRobot’s error chart. The fixes are the same, starting with re-seating the bin.
